DOVER — Following the final vote on President Trump’s disastrous tax bill, Sen. Ray Seigfried and Sen. Marie Pinkney issued the following joint statement:
“The past six months of the President’s second term have been full of abrupt policy shifts that disproportionately alter the lives of our most vulnerable constituents. But today’s vote isn’t just a shock to the American health care system — it’s an unapologetic elimination of coverage for the people who need it most.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, Trump’s budget bill will cut federal spending on Medicaid and Affordable Care Act marketplaces by about $1 trillion over the next decade. This means millions of Americans — specifically, thousands of Delawareans — will lose health care coverage.
These cuts are due to sweeping new restrictions on Medicaid eligibility, including a proposed work requirement, which would cut off coverage for enrollees who do not meet new employment standards. Medicaid patients will also see copay increases, which we know will deter lower-income patients seeking the care they need.
But make no mistake: while everyone will be affected in some way, it will be low-income families and the residents of rural, southern Delaware who will suffer the most at the hands of Republicans in Washington. All across the country, our rural communities will be the first to lose access to primary, preventative, and emergency care. We already have a primary care shortage in Delaware, and we can be sure this bill will worsen the problem.
Caring for a loved one is the most fundamental act of the human race. Donald Trump’s bill does just the opposite. On behalf of our Democratic colleagues in Dover, we will continue fighting for health services at an affordable cost for the people we serve.”
