WHAT: Sen. Sarah McBride, America’s first out transgender state senator and the highest-ranking transgender elected official in the nation, will be hosting an in-person, socially distanced media availability for her official swearing-in on January 12.
As announced last month, the first day of the new legislative session will be held virtually with Senators remotely taking their oaths of office, electing a President Pro Tempore, confirming a Secretary of the Senate and adopting rules for conducting legislative business. The proceedings will be streamed live directly on the General Assembly’s website, under a section marked “Live Proceedings.” Those who wish to watch session proceedings after they have concluded can watch recordings by following links under the “Meetings & Archives” tab at the top of the page.
Sen. McBride will be participating in the virtual proceedings from outside of the Claymont Community Center, where she will be sworn in by Superior Court Judge Jan. R. Jurden in the presence of her family and transgender students from the area.
Socially distanced space will be reserved for members of the media who wish to cover Sen. McBride’s historic swearing-in. The senator also will be available to take questions prior to the Senate gaveling in at 2 p.m.
