Medical debt can happen to anyone at any time. During the 152nd General Assembly, Sen. Spiros Mantzavinos and Rep. Kim Williams passed Senate Bill 8 and 99 that offered reasonable payment plans to patients, and also limited the sale of debt to debt collectors.
To further economic safety measures for Delawareans, Sen. Mantzavinos introduced SB 156 to create the Medical Debt Protection Act. SB 156 will join the previous package of legislations to now include the prohibition of medical debt to consumer reporting agencies – preventing those experiencing medical debt from facing additional obstacles with credit reporting agencies, consumer reports, and others.
This legislation passed unanimously by both the House and Senate, and was signed into law by Gov. Matt Meyer in the Summer of 2025.
