Less than a week after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and left all regulation surrounding abortion up to individual states, Sen. Gay sponsored an amendment to the Delaware Constitution that would have ensured every Delawarean is afforded personal reproductive liberty.
Senate Bill 343 would have added language to the Delaware Bill of Rights clearly stating “(a)n individual’s rights to personal reproductive autonomy is fundamental to liberty and dignity to determine one’s own life course and may not be directly or indirectly denied, burdened or abridged …”
While at least three other states have added abortion rights protections to their constitutions, Republican legislators have refused to support such a move in the First State, effectively blocking the two-thirds majority needed to enshrine reproductive liberty in the Delaware Constitution.
