Job Description

Position: Press Secretary

Summary Statement

The Senate Democratic Caucus is hiring a Press Secretary to join the Communications Team. This staff member must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and will serve as the primary liaison between members of the media and Senate Democrats.

Nature and Scope

The Press Secretary shall report to and receive direct assignments from the Communications Director, Caucus Chief of Staff, members of the Senate Majority Leadership team, and all other members of the Senate Majority Caucus.

Due to the sensitive nature of the work, the Press Secretary must be able to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and an ability to prioritize competing work assignments. The Press Secretary must be able to keep track of all pending assignments and ensure all assigned tasks are completed on deadline. The Press Secretary is expected to commit to a flexible work schedule, which will include meetings and events in the evening and during weekends.

The Press Secretary’s scope of work should align with the statewide media landscape, political realities of individual caucus members, and include competency of a broad spectrum of communication platforms and strategies.

Required Skills

Candidates for the role of Press Secretary shall possess the following skills:

  • A minimum 2+ years experience working with the Delaware press corp
  • The ability to write clearly, concisely, and quickly
  • The ability to produce press releases, speeches, newsletters and other written documents on deadline
  • Knowledge of Associated Press grammar style
  • Social media acumen
  • Knowledge and understanding of local politics and issues, and their impact on the caucus as a whole, as well as individual members
  • Photography and videography skills
  • Research skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, photo editing software, e-newsletter/marketing programs
  • The ability to adapt, change course, and/or multi-task as necessary

Principal Duties

  • Responding to media inquiries
  • Planning and executing media events (press conferences, interviews, public events, etc.) 
  • Drafting and sending press releases, media advisories, etc.
  • Coordinating with other entities (other caucuses, the governor’s office, outside entities/layers of government)
  • Drafting speeches, letters, opinion pieces and other printed communications for members
  • Partnering with legislative staff on constituent communications materials as needed
  • Working with other members of the Senate Communications Team to manage caucus and individual members’ social media presences 
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Salary

The salary range for the Press Secretary Position is $60,000 – $65,000 commensurate with skill set and experience.
