Senate Committees Announced for 152nd General Assembly

DOVER – Senate President Pro Tempore-Elect Dave Sokola on Monday unveiled a slate of 17 Senate committees for the 152nd General Assembly and announced the individual members who will be assigned to each committee.
“Legislative committees are an essential part of the legislative process where Senators gather public input and determine which bills should move forward,” Sokola said. “The assignments I’m announcing today will give every member of our majority caucus the opportunity to lead, while giving the minority caucus proportional representation. I believe this balance will help assure Delawareans that all voices are being heard and our values are reflected in the bills that reach the full Senate for a floor vote.”

The new slate of Senate committees includes some key changes from the 151st General Assembly.

The previously distinct Transportation Committee has been merged into the new Environment, Energy & Transportation Committee, while the Banking, Business & Insurance Committee will expand its scope to include matters related to technology and the Housing Committee will expand its scope to include land use.

“These changes reflect how intertwined these issues are with one another,” Sokola said. “As we continue to make record investments in our roads and bridges, we need to be ever mindful of how our transportation network impacts Delaware’s fragile ecosystems and open spaces. Likewise, technology is now a central component of any commercial operation and land use is inextricably linked with housing.”

Following an historic election in which voters expanded Democrats’ supermajority in the Delaware Senate, most Senate committees have also been adjusted to reflect a similar majority. “Adding additional Senators to committees will give our members stronger voices in shaping the policies of our State,” Sokola said. “These assignments put Senators’ individual expertise and personal experiences to the highest and best use. I look forward to beginning the new session knowing we’ve put the Senate in a position to advance the issues that matter most to Delawareans.”
Committees and committee assignments will become official when the General Assembly reconvenes on January 10, 2023.
