Delaware Senate Leadership reaffirms support for medical abortion

April 7, 2023

DOVER — In response to the federal ruling that halts FDA approval of mifepristone — an abortion medication — Senate President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola, Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend, and Senate Majority Whip Elizabeth “Tizzy” Lockman issued a joint statement:

“Tonight’s federal ruling is disappointing, and is yet another politically-motivated attack on reproductive rights in the United States. Mifepristone — one of the two drugs most commonly used in medication abortions — has had FDA approval for more than two decades and is widely embraced by the medical and scientific community as a safe and effective drug. In conjunction with misoprostol, these two medications account for about half of all abortions that take place across our country.

We don’t yet know what this will mean for the availability of mifepristone across the country, as there is a seven-day stay on the decision out of Texas and a contradictory ruling from Washington State that will keep mifepristone legal in several plaintiff states, including Delaware.

But one thing is certain: abortion remains legal in the First State. The Senate Majority Caucus remains committed to protecting access to reproductive care for all who need it.”
